SYNOPSIS: Commander Straker and Colonel Foster find themselves in a strange underwater double-world in which they come face to face with their own apparent twins.
Two incidents take Ed Straker and Paul Foster to a volcanic island in the Atlantic. One is when a freighter is sunk by a mysterious object in the shape of a flying fish. The other is when a film cameraman meets his death while photographing fish from that same area which have found their way to the English coast. At the same time, a report comes in from one of the S.H.A.D.O. personnel, named Lieutenant Anderson that a mass attack by UFO's is imminent.
When Straker and Foster, following reports from a SkyDiver captain investigate, they find an underwater cable which the flying fish, now identified as a UFO, was using as a power source. Following this, they come to a huge dome, which they investigate, but find impossible to enter. Clearing a section of the outer coating, they look in and to their amazement see Lt. Anderson inside. Yet when they return to S.H.A.D.O. headquarters, they find Lt. Anderson already there. He denies any knowledge of the dome but, as a precaution, he is put under detention while Straker and Foster go back again to investigate the mysterious dome more closely. A watch has been kept on it all the time by SkyDiver.
This time, when they lean against it, they suddenly find themselves on the inside. Beginning their search, they go separate ways, but when they come face to face again Foster launches a surprise attack on Straker. Defending himself, Straker kills his opponent. Then, to his bewilderment, Foster himself appears and they realise that the body on the floor is an exact double. Investigating still further, they make another astonishing discovery. As they go through a door, they find themselves in an identical replica of S.H.A.D.O. Control, and doubles of all the staff appear. When they overhear instructions being given to Moonbase to allow the missed UFO's through without interception, the truth dawns on them. Aliens have hit on a plan to fool Moonbase into believing that instructions are coming from the real S.H.A.D.O. Control. There is little time to spare. The SkyDiver crew have been told to destroy the dome if Straker and Foster have not returned in an hour: and the hour is almost up . . .

STRAKER IS SITTING IN THE THEATRE. BORED TO TEARS. HE IS VIEWING WITH THE PRODUCER AND PRODUCTION MANAGER A DOCUMENTARY FILM ABOUT FISHING. ON THE SCREEN WE SEE SEVERAL SHOTS OF A PICTURESQUE CORNISH FISHING VILLAGE.
PRODUCER
I found this place last year, on a cycling holiday with my wife. I thought it would be a good idea to contrast the modern fishing methods with the old... look at that.
ON THE SCREEN WE SEE A SHOT OF A PARTICULARLY OLD PART OF THE VILLAGE. A COUPLE OF FISHERMEN ARE LEAVING A HOUSE WITH LONG ROWING OARS OVER THEIR SHOULDERS.
PRODUCER
Could be back in the seventeenth century.
STRAKER
(stifling a yawn)
Yes, very good. Very good.
PRODUCER
Just look at the textures of all the brickwork... must be all of three hundred years old.
STRAKER
Um... yes...
CUT TO:

CUT TO:

CUT TO:

THE PRODUCER HARDLY HEARS. HE IS SO ENGROSSED WITH HIS NEW DISCOVERY.
PRODUCER
Yes, yes, Mr. Straker... quite understand.
STRAKER HURRIES OUT. THE PRODUCER TURNS TO HIS PRODUCTION MANAGER.
PRODUCER
Send an underwater cameraman down tomorrow... I think we may have a very interesting new dimension to this film.

STRAKER
N. L. twelve? That’s only four hours away.
JOHNSON
I’ve alerted all stations.
STRAKER
Put observation platform Watchdog in that zone. Computerise every piece of information it sends in... no matter how small…
HALF TO HIMSELF:
A mass UFO attack... our defence screen will knock out at least half of them... before they even get into earth’s atmosphere. It doesn’t make sense... it wouldn’t be a practical proposition…
JOHNSON
Maybe they expect to get them all through.
STRAKER
They know that’s not possible... unless they have something else up their sleeves.

THE DIRECTOR OF THE DOCUMENTARY FILM AND TWO CAMERA CREW ARE ABOARD. AN OLD FISHERMAN IS JUST CUTTING THE ENGINE. THE CAMERAMAN IS ALREADY DRESSED IN A SKIN DIVING SUIT LACKING THE MASK, WHICH THE CAMERA ASSISTANT HOLDS.
CAMERAMAN
All this way just to photograph fish that shouldn’t be here. They must have more money than sense.
DIRECTOR
If you do see any, shoot about two hundred feet. From at least six different angles. O.K?
CAMERAMAN
Okay.
THE ASSISTANT HANDS HIM THE MASK, WHICH HE PUTS ON.
DIRECTOR
(into small mike)
Testing... one... two... three... four...
CAMERAMAN
(squeezed)
Loud and clear.
THE ASSISTANT HANDS HIM THE UNDERWATER CAMERA. HE SITS ON THE SIDE OF THE BOAT THEN ROLLS OFF BACKWARDS INTO THE WATER.
CAMERAMAN
(squeezed)
Well at least the water’s warm.
DIRECTOR
See anything?
CAMERAMAN
(squeezed)
Not yet... strange... the deeper I go the warmer the water... Well, your fish are here... Hundreds of them. Not only that... several different tropical kinds. Most be this warm water. I can see something else...
WITH CONTROLLED PANIC.
It’s like a flying fish... large... silver. It’s turning towards me…
THE DIRECTOR SPEAKS SHARPLY TO THE FISHERMAN.
DIRECTOR
Are there sharks in these waters?
THE FISHERMAN SHAKES HIS HEAD.
CAMERAMAN
(panicking)
It’s coming for me…
HE SCREAMS STOP AS THE COMMUNICATIONS LINK GOES DEAD. THE DIRECTOR AND THE CAMERA ASSISTANT LOOK DESPERATELY INTO THE WATER. THE CAMERAMAN COMES TO THE SURFACE. THEY PULL HIM ABOARD. THE AIR PIPE IS BROKEN. QUICKLY THEY REMOVE HIS MASK. THE WATER RUNS OUT.

Yes.
HE STOPS BY A MAP OF THE WORLD.
A species of fish normally found here.
INDICATING ON THE MAP.
Never before seen off the coast of Cornwall.
THE INSURANCE MAN WRITES.
INSURANCE MAN
Did anybody check to find out about sharks in this area?
PRODUCER
I did, personally. I was assured that they rarely come to that part of the coast... and the occasional one that did was harmless.
INSURANCE MAN
(hard)
But the air pipe was severed.
PRODUCER
(flatly)
Yes.
INSURANCE MAN
Well, that’s all, gentlemen. When our investigations are completed I will call again to discuss the claim. Good day.
HE TAKES HIS HAT AND LEAVES

JOHNSON
Last report indicated no change. UFO’s still in stationary position and showing no signs of moving.
STRAKER
What are they waiting for? What does the computer think?
JOHNSON
With so little information, it’s reluctant to give an answer. When I insisted, it said they can only be waiting for a) reinforcements, b) bad weather to negate radar, c) the non-operation of defences namely S.H.A.D.O. control.
STRAKER
(disgusted)
Well we know there has been no sign of reinforcements. The weather forecast is good for the next month and S.H.A.D.O. certainly won’t stop operating.

STRAKER
It seems a UFO is using the volcano as a front door to the Atlantic. SkyDiver also found the reason for the rise in water temperature. An undersea cable. The UFO was using it as an energy supply.
FOSTER
But they can travel underwater on their own power.
STRAKER
Yes, for short distances.
FOSTER
And you think this one had been to Cornwall.
STRAKER
It looks that way.
FOSTER
Then there must be an energy plant under the volcano. If the water temperature is so high it’s generating a lot more power than is needed to drive one U.F.O.

FOSTER
What are we going to do? Blow it up?
STRAKER
No. We must first find out what goes on in there.
FOSTER
How? There’s no entrance.

START ON THE FLASHING LIGHTS OF THE COMPUTER. THE INFORMATION STARTS TO COME OUT ON ITS AUTOMATIC TYPEWRITER.
COMPUTER MAN
(reading)
Answer to question one. From Jackson’s psychiatric report can find no reason for disloyalty. Answer to question two. As you insist on asking questions without giving sufficient information I can only supply unsatisfactory answers. The most I can about the last question, “Is there any link between the undersea dome and the massing of U.F.O.’s in Area N.M.L. Twelve?” is, if there is a link it can only be connected with my previous answer.
A) Reinforcements... possibly the dome is a construction to house U.F.O.’s.
B) it contains elaborate equipment to be used to change the weather, to negate radar.
C) it is there to bring about... in some way... the non-function of S.H.A.D.O. to allow the U.F.O.’s uninterrupted entrance to earth’s atmosphere.
FOSTER
Well, that’s a mass of useless information.
THE COMPUTER MAN BRIDLES
STRAKER
Let’s try rephrasing the questions.
COMPUTER MAN
(annoyed)
Each question was asked twelve different ways, sir, and always the same answer. There's just not enough information.
STRAKER
Yes, yes, I’m sorry. I know there’s not much to go on. The only way we will find out is to get inside the dome. As soon as you’ve fed in the analysts’s report on my knife, let me know.
COMPUTER MAN

Yes, sir. We’ll do our best.

(reading)
The deposits on your knife indicate that the substance from which the undersea construction is made of is of a molecular structure unknown to us. But my conclusion is... that entrance could be made by pressure. The rupture would be self-sealing.
STRAKER
Thank you, Johnson.
COMPUTER MAN
(stiffly)
Thank you, sir. I hope the answer is satisfactory.
STRAKER
Johnson... I know your problems. The answer is satisfactory.
COMPUTER MAN

STRAKER CROSSES THE ROOM. WE PAN WITH HIM TO REVEAL JOHNSON.
STRAKER
No hard feelings?
JOHNSON
All is forgiven... and that’s the truth, sir.

● Lieutenant James Anderson was originally to become a permanent replacement for Lieutenant Keith Ford and was listed as part of the regular cast in the script. The character was originally named ’Lieutenant Johnson’, but the name was changed so as to avoid confusion with Lieutenant Ayshea Johnson (and it should go without saying who 'Anderson' was named after).
● It was originally suggested that Commander Straker should be attacked by his own doppelgänger (duplicate: rather than that of a S.H.A.D.O. operative) when he tried to escape from the dome.
● After witnessing their doppelgängers practicing miming to the recordings, Commander Straker says that "The Aliens plan to 'take over SHADO Control'", when the actual script stated: “take over and control S.H.A.D.O.” (The Aliens plan is to use their duplicate S.H.A.D.O. Control to override transmissions to Moonbase and SkyDiver, not invade the real S.H.A.D.O. Control and replace the staff with the duplicates).
● During the final battle, three Space Interceptors are launched, but four are seen making successful strikes (although it could be argued that S.H.A.D.O. may have more than just three Interceptors), or the interceptors had already returned to Moonbase to reload.
