video Phone Mk.II

The aim of this project is to recreate an authentic original and Mk.II version of Commander Straker's Video Phone.

The Video Phone was modified during the UFO TV Series

During the 26 episodes of UFO, the Video Phone was modified in a number of ways. After carefully watching all the episodes, it is clear that the Video Phone was unmodified until the UFO episode "The Dalotek Affair" (#7 in production order) in this episode, the two connector input holes (presumably for mains feed and a video input - rear bottom right of the casing) were modified from two circular holes to two vertical slots that extended down to the bottom of the case. Also, from Episode 18 (The Sound of Silence) onwards: two sets of eleven ventilation slots were added to the top of the Video Phone casing either side of the central fin.

Video Phone rear connectors
The two rear connector holes were modified from two circular holes to two vertical slots that extended to the bottom of the Video Phone casing.

During various episodes, two domed screw heads (sometimes silver, and sometimes matching the colour of the unit) can be seen on the back panel of the video phone, centred just above the two input holes/slots. I

am making the assumption that these were screws to secure the rear

removable panel of the video phone. It is possible that these two screw heads were there during all the episodes, and just weren’t visible due to the lighting, but, in some episodes - in close up shots - it is possible to see that the screw heads are not visible.

Video Phone top ventilation slots

Two rows of eleven ventilation slots were added to the top of the casing either side of the central fin. I am making the assumption that the two rows of slots on the top of the unit were to allow cooling ventilation. When operating with a circa 1969 cathode ray tube and associated electronics, quite a large amount of heat would have been generated by the power supply, the electronics and tube itself. Under the studio lights, things would have got quite hot. Also, in certain episodes it is possible to see a circular hole underneath the video screen casing just behind the video camera; this hole would have allowed cooler air to be drawn into the casing and then discharged through the two rows of ventilations slots at top, thus helping to cool the video phone.

A slightly inset rear panel can be seen with two domed locking screwheads. Also, two circular connector holes.
REAR PANEL

However, in some episodes - in close up shots - it is possible to see that the screw heads are not visible.

VENTILATION SLOTS AND HOLES

Two rows of eleven ventilation slots were added to the top of the casing either side of the central fin. I am making the assumption that the slots on the top of the unit were to allow cooling ventilation. When operating with a circa 1969 cathode ray tube and associated electronics, quite a large amount of heat would have been generated. Under the studio lights, things would have got quite hot. In certain episodes, it is possible to see a circular hole underneath the video screen casing just behind the video camera: this hole would have allowed cooler air to be drawn into the casing and then discharged through the two rows of slots at top, thus helping to cool the video phone.

The S.H.A.D.O. Video Phone: the circular cornered screen insert can be seen here.
ROUND CORNERED SCREEN INSERT

The Video Phone screen had a round cornered semi-rectangular insert placed in front of the TV tube. This insert was not present when the Video Phone was first seen in the film, "doppelgänger". In the film, the Video Phone displays colour video and it is evident that the sequence showing Norma Ronald's character was superimposed (Double Exposure or Superimposition) whereby the two film sequences appeared simultaneously with the overlay superimposed over the main static shot) shown in place of the Video Phone’s screen into the film: the position of the Video Phone is static throughout the shot, and once again a little afterwards.
